The First Burn is the most important!

The first burn of your candle will determine how it burns each time you light it. Before lighting your candle make sure you have enough time to allow it to burn for as long as it needs.

To estimate the time needed allocate approx. 1 hour for every inch of the candles diameter, for example three inches will need approx. 3 hours. Soy wax has a memory and will burn in the same way every time it is lit, this means if you do not let the candle burn for long enough the first time, your candle will tunnel as it burns moving forward.

We recommend you do not burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. The reason for this is that too much burnt wick at one time will curl over and may cause your candle to smoke and soot, it may also result in your wick becoming trapped within the wax pool once your candle cools and resets.

Once you have extinguished your candle wait for the wax pool to cool so that you don’t get burnt and trim the wick to approx. 5mm above the wax. Repeat this process after every use.

All candle producers recommend this however it is especially important with Cotton and Wood wick candles to trim the wick as they do not contain any metals, this makes them a cleaner burn. 

If you find yourself with the wick to your candle embedded in the wax, don’t panic, you will not need to throw your beautifully scented away.

  • Sit your candle on a stable and heat proof surface such as your kitchen counter and grab a hairdryer, tweezers and a pair of oven gloves. Heat the top of the candle with your hairdryer until the wax melts and the wick is exposed.

  • Wearing your gloves hold the glass steady whilst retrieving the wick with the tweezers.

  • Trim the wick and your candle is ready to be used again.

We want you to stay safe whilst using candles and wax melts, so here are a few things to remember.

  • Keep your candle and wax melts out of the reach of children and pets

  • Keep them away from drafts and vibrations.

  • Never burn candles or wax melts near anything that can catch fire, eg. curtains

  • Do not burn your candle or wax melts if you are feeling sleepy or intoxicated.

  • Place your candle on a level, fire resistant surface where it is unlikely to get knocked

  • Place pillar candles on a candle plate or holder so the heat does not meet with your furniture and mark it if the wax drips.

  • Make sure your candle is fully extinguished before leaving the room.

  • Keep candles free of foreign materials including matches and wick trimmings.

  • Never be tempted to touch hot wax.

  • Do not leave the candle unattended at any time.

  • Candles will be hot for some time after they have been extinguished, please keep this in mind before moving it or disposing of.

  • Make sure the candle when lit is not in a highly enclosed area for eg. Box shelves

Have you ever picked up a candle that says approx. 50 hours burn time and you’ve only got 35 or maybe it was better, and you got 65 hours? Candle manufacturers normally use one of two tests to give you an approximate burn time:

  1. Option one is to weigh the candle, burn it for 2 hours as an example, let the candle set and weigh it again. Based on how much wax has gone in the time they use this to calculate how long it would take to burn the rest of the candle. Not very precise is it!

  2. Option two is to light the candle and burn it in intervals of 2 hours for example, blow it out let it re-harden and continue to do this until the candle has completely gone.

We follow the Option two method, and the approximate burning time we set for each burn is in accordance to the diameter of the candle. It is not possible to provide an exact burn time as it will vary depending on how long you burn your candle for at once, how often you light it (for example once a day, twice, etc), the room temperature, if there’s a draft etc.

When we test a candle for it’s burn time we reduce the time the candle has achieved slightly to try and factor the setting in which you burn a candle, we would rather you be surprised with a longer burn time rather than disappointed that’s it didn’t achieve it but it is still an approximate not a guarantee.
